Change The Batteries When You Change the Clocks This Weekend
On March 14, the Washington Township Fire Department wants to remind you to change the time on your clocks. The official time change is 2 a.m. When you adjust the clock change the batteries in your smoke alarms, flashlights and portable radios, as well.
Statistics have shown that nearly 90% of all United States homes have smoke alarms. Unfortunately, more than half of those may not be working due to dead batteries. The Washington Township Fire Department recommends testing your smoke alarms once a month. When the time changes each spring and fall, it is recommended to install fresh batteries in the alarms. This will help you know that your alarms are always ready to alert you.
Of course, having a working smoke alarm is one part of the system to help you stay safe. Another is to make sure that your family practices home exit drills at least once or twice a year. Knowing what to do in a fire is important. Practicing how to do it is even more important.
The Washington Township Fire Department offers basic guidelines for planning and practicing home exit drills on the department web site at www.washingtontwp.org/fire. Look for download links and activities for the kids, as well.
A heightened awareness of storms, tornados, floods and other natural disasters is also seen each spring and summer. Having working flashlights and portable radios can help you stay prepared in the event of a power outage. Short power outages are inconvenient. Extended outages can be disruptive to our daily lives and possibly our health and well-being. Be prepared in advance with some of the tools and supplies that you might need.
